Scientists and Indigenous knowledge holders are working together to understand and restore kelp ecosystems along Canada’s coast. The effort also recognizes the role of sea otters and the long history of people caring for these waters.
Healthy kelp forests create habitat and help coastal ecosystems withstand change. Restoration is stronger when it combines measurement with the knowledge of communities that have watched the shoreline over generations.
