Researchers at UC San Francisco are using artificial intelligence to help personalize deep-brain stimulation for people with Parkinson’s disease who have trouble walking. By studying each participant’s gait, the team developed stimulation settings tailored to the movement challenges that person was experiencing.
For someone whose steps have become uncertain, a steadier walk can mean more than mobility. It can mean reaching the kitchen without help, moving through a conversation at eye level, or feeling a little more at home in one’s own body. The work is still developing, but its purpose is wonderfully concrete: helping people move through daily life with greater freedom.
