Ebro Ahmed was taking a break outside his family’s corner store in St. Paul on October 19 when a school bus passed with its door open. Seeing the driver in medical distress, the 27-year-old ran aboard and brought the vehicle to a stop with its parking brake.

Police reported no injuries, and the school district said the driver was resting at home by Wednesday. Students received a check-in from the school’s mental-health team. On October 22, local broadcaster Sheletta Brundidge surprised Ahmed at work with a $1,000 thank-you. He said he planned to put the money toward his window-tinting business.
