Traveling alone does not always mean wanting to be alone, and some travel companies are getting more specific about that distinction. In a September essay republished this month, University of Colorado Boulder professor Peter McGraw looks at an industry still largely designed around pairs, from room prices to the social side of a trip.

One concrete change came in January, when Tauck announced it would waive the single supplement on Category 1 cabins across its 2026 European river-cruise departures. McGraw's larger question goes beyond price: can a trip offer privacy and independence while making company easy to find? Lower surcharges help, but they are only one part of designing a holiday for one.
