Harvard researchers have used microscopic sound waves to help protect a delicate quantum bit, extending its coherence time by roughly threefold in an experiment. The work could eventually support compact quantum networks built directly onto chips. It is a very small vibration carrying a very large idea: information may one day travel through sound as well as light or electricity.
