Researchers at UC Berkeley used human-derived brain organoids to study childhood epilepsy. Their report in Nature points to hyperreactive astrocytes, a type of brain cell, as a major driver of inflammation linked to seizures in the children studied.

The work is an early research step, not a ready-made treatment. Its promise is more practical: models that reflect human biology may help researchers test questions about disease mechanisms and possible therapies before moving to clinical care.
