UCF doctoral researcher Lauren Deaner is studying whether moving Florida scrub-jays between populations can strengthen the species through what conservation biologists call genetic rescue. Researchers moved 48 young birds to a new site, and four of the ten new pairs observed attempted to nest during their first season, far earlier than expected.

The result is promising but not conclusive. The team is combining field monitoring, genetic data, RFID tracking, and population modeling to learn whether the birds establish territories, reproduce, and add useful genetic diversity over time.
